Easy Plants to Start with

We’ve been keeping warm and catching up on video calls, when we discovered one of us is new to “live” plants. Sitting in this cold snow globe of Toronto got our new plant parent to spruce up her home and start her own little indoor oasis. Thinking of becoming a plant parent as well? Join us as we share some of our recommended easy plants to start with:

Snake Plant - Easy Plants to Start with

1. Snake Plant

You cannot go wrong with a snake plant. There are a number of varieties to choose from, and the fun part is they all look different. Their leaves grow upright and make a gorgeous addition to any home. They are tolerable of any light conditions from low to bright, indirect and like to be watered once completely dried out. Our plant newbie told us she forgot about hers for more than 2 weeks and it still looked lush!

Spider Plant - Easy Plants to Start with

2. Spider Plant

No, it’s not a theme. Not all plants named after animals are easy to care for! But the spider plant is! It loves bright to moderate, indirect sunlight, and it requires water when the top few inches of the soil is dry. Its gorgeous foliage is a treat for the eye with its bushy and beautiful look. It pairs well on a coffee table, dining table, or even on a lovely hanging planter (hint hint - Mini Mofo).

Pothos - Easy Plants to Start with

3. Pothos

This stunning trailing plant is a show-stopper for your home. It’s super easy to care for and you will never get enough of its beautiful lushy, heart-shaped leaves with golden yellow variegation. It loves a brightly lit spot with indirect light, but can tolerate medium to low light conditions as well. It also requires water when the top few inches of its soil is dry. It looks great on top of a fridge, on a shelf in your living room, or in a hanging planter as it trails down.

ZZ Plant - Easy Plants to Start with

4. ZZ Plant

The Zamioculcas Zamiifolia (a mouthful, for sure) is a tropical plant that is beautiful and easy to take care of. It’s shiny, almost waxy, leaves are an instant attraction. It can thrive in a bright to low light situation and requires minimal care - water when soil dries out. Yep. It’s that easy for this beauty! It looks great in any setting such as the home office, bedroom or even a nice spot in your living room.

Houseplant 101 Class Easy Plants to Start with
If you want to take your plant care to the next level, we highly recommend signing up for our Houseplant 101 classes. Who doesn’t want a fun evening of plant chatter and care tips? This class is for new plant parents. You can ask all the questions you've been afraid to ask without being judged. A fun one our new plant parent asked was “Do I really sing to my plant?” which we graciously answered - Plants thrive when they listen to music that sits between 115Hz and 250Hz, and they're picky about their music - Jazz and Classical seem to be their preference for no more than 3 hours per day. Sign up today so you can join in on the fun learning process and keep your new plant pals happy!
