Gifts for music lovers, knitters, photographers and every other weekend obsession, in hand-painted glass. This collection hangs the hobby on the tree — electric and rock guitars, a grand piano, a jukebox, a cassette, cameras, tape measures, a knitting basket — each ornament blown and painted by hand and priced in CAD. Ships across Canada from our Toronto studio.

Gifts for music lovers run into the same wall as every hobby gift: the recipient already owns the equipment, in a specification the giver cannot possibly know and would be wrong to guess at. The guitarist has the guitar. The knitter has the needles. The photographer has opinions about the lens the giver was about to buy. A hand-painted glass ornament of the hobby sidesteps the whole problem — it does not try to join the kit; it commemorates the kit’s owner, and it hangs at eye level where the household can see what somebody in this house disappears to do.

This collection covers the weekend’s whole territory: electric and rock guitars, a grand piano and a jukebox for the music household; a knitting basket and two tape measures for the makers; a still camera and a movie camera; sneakers, a yoga mat, an ice skate, an arcade machine, a game controller, a slot machine, and a crossword for everyone else. Each piece is blown and painted by hand at the Chive studio. It arrives gift-ready, needs no sizing, and holds no position on string gauge, yarn weight or sensor size. Ships across Canada from our Toronto studio.

Gifts for knitters

Gifts for knitters should never be yarn, because the knitter’s yarn is chosen with a care the giver cannot replicate and any substitution will be noticed before the wrapping is off. A hand-painted glass knitting ornament — a basket, needles, a ball of yarn mid-row — honours the craft without presuming to supply it. It hangs on the tree through the months when the knitter is busiest, and it is the one piece in the house the knitter did not have to make.

Gifts for photographers

Gifts for photographers are dangerous because photographers have opinions about glass — specifically, which glass goes in front of the sensor and how much it should cost. A hand-blown glass camera ornament is the one piece of glass they will not critique. It hangs on the tree, declares the obsession, and carries no position on full-frame versus crop, prime versus zoom, or film versus the thing that replaced film. In a photography household, that restraint is the gift.

Every hobby ornament is designed at the Chive studio, blown and painted by hand, and ships gift-ready. Ships across Canada from our Toronto studio. 2004 Designing ornaments since · Stocked at the Royal Ontario Museum — Canada’s most-visited museum · Featured at TIFF, the Toronto International Film Festival · In the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

What are good gifts for music lovers?

A hand-painted glass instrument ornament — gifts for music lovers work when they honour the listening without buying another thing that needs tuning. An electric guitar, a rock guitar, a grand piano, a jukebox or a cassette tape hangs on the tree as evidence of the household’s soundtrack. It needs no strings, no amp and no opinion on whether vinyl sounds warmer. The music lover already owns the music. This is the one piece of the collection that stays put.

What are gifts for knitters?

A hand-painted glass knitting ornament — gifts for knitters should steer clear of yarn, needles and pattern books, all of which the knitter has already chosen with more care than any giver can match. The ornament commemorates the craft from a safe distance: it hangs on the tree, it requires no gauge swatch, and it is the one finished object in the house the knitter did not have to make. It ships gift-ready across Canada and never unravels.

What are gifts for photographers?

A hand-blown glass camera ornament — gifts for photographers that avoid the one subject photographers argue about, which is glass of a different kind. The ornament hangs on the tree and declares the obsession without weighing in on lenses, bodies or whether film is back. It is the only glass in the house the photographer will not review. Hand-painted at the studio, priced in CAD, and it holds focus all December.

What are gifts for piano players?

A hand-painted glass grand piano ornament — gifts for piano players should acknowledge that the piano is already the largest object in the room and does not need company. An ornament of it hangs on the tree at a fraction of the scale, needs no tuning, and does not require anyone to move a sofa. It marks the player’s place in the household without adding to the furniture. The piano stays where it is. The ornament travels to the branch.

What are good gifts for runners?

A hand-painted glass sneaker ornament — gifts for runners are a minefield because runners know their shoe, their drop, their mileage and the exact week the current pair expires, and they would rather you did not guess. A glass sneaker in pink or seafoam skips the fitting entirely. It hangs on the tree, logs no kilometres, needs no replacing at 600, and still looks new in March when the real pair has been retired. It is the one running shoe in the house that will never be asked to go outside in January.

What are good sewing gifts?

A hand-painted glass tape measure ornament — sewing gifts work when they honour the measuring without supplying the fabric, the thread or the machine, all of which the sewist has already specified. The red or purple tape measure hangs on the tree as a small tribute to the person who hems everyone else’s trousers. It takes no measurements, pins nothing, and never goes missing under a pattern piece. The sewing room has everything. The tree now has the sewist.

What are gifts for crafters?

A hand-painted glass ornament of the craft — gifts for crafters land when they commemorate the making rather than adding to the supply shelf, which is already full and already organised in a system the giver should not disturb. Knitting, measuring, building: the collection covers the makers’ table in glass and hangs it on the tree. The crafter made everything else in the room. Somebody should make something for the crafter.

What are gifts for firefighters?

A hand-painted glass fire hydrant ornament — gifts for firefighters should honour the job without pretending to equip it. The hydrant hangs on the tree in red glass, recognisable from across the room, and asks nothing of the recipient except a branch. It ships gift-ready across Canada, suits a station tree or a home tree, and has never once been responsible for a false alarm.
