Is a snake plant the same as mother-in-law's tongue?

Yes. Mother-in-law's tongue is another common name for the snake plant, Dracaena trifasciata. The ASPCA also lists it as golden bird's nest and good luck plant, and you will still see it sold as sansevieria.

Is a snake plant a dracaena?

Yes. Botanists moved snake plants from Sansevieria into the genus Dracaena in 2017, so the snake plant is now Dracaena trifasciata. It is still a succulent, though, and wants far less water than the cane dracaenas on our dracaena page.

Where can I buy a large snake plant in Toronto?

Our largest snake plants are the 10-inch and 12-inch floor sizes, sold at the Chive plant shop at 702 Queen St W and on chive.ca for hand delivery or pick-up. Wintergreen grows 60 to 90 cm tall and Black Coral reaches about a metre, when we have them.

Is a snake plant safe for cats?

No. The ASPCA lists the snake plant as toxic to cats because of saponins, which can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It is toxic to dogs too, so keep it where pets that chew can't reach it.

Can you pot my snake plant before it leaves?

Yes, every snake plant is potted before it leaves the shop, and the potting is included in the price shown. Choose the grow pot or one of the house pots offered with each plant and size; potting is $1 per inch of pot, already built into that one price.

What sizes of snake plant do you carry?

Our snake plants run from a desk-sized 4-inch pot up to 12-inch floor size, depending on the variety. Laurentii comes in the widest range, while Wintergreen and Zeylanica come as floor sizes.

Which snake plant does best in a dark room?

No snake plant thrives in the dark, but Zeylanica and Laurentii tolerate low light best; all of them grow very slowly there, and Moonshine loses its silver. None of them like the dark. They just slow down so much in it that people mistake the stillness for gratitude. Zeylanica and Laurentii put up with a dim room best, the way I put up with February: present, upright, not growing. Moonshine goes plain green out of sheer boredom.

Snake Plants

Chive Plant Studio sells snake plants from its plant shop on Queen Street West in Toronto, grown by our nursery partners and potted before they go home. The snake plant is the only thing in my shop that leaves exactly the way it arrived: upright, unblinking, uninterested. Last week a man carried one to the till pressed against his chest like a fence picket he was returning to the hardware store. It forgives almost anything except a watering can, which is the one thing you'll want to give it.

A woman stood at the potting bench for ten minutes while I potted her Laurentii, watched me finish without watering it once, and asked, very gently, whether this was some kind of hazing. It was not. For a snake plant, dry soil is the welcome party. We carry Zeylanica, Laurentii and Moonshine, with Wintergreen and Black Coral when we have them, from a desk-sized 4-inch pot up to 12-inch floor size.
