Default Nursery Pot or Upgrade to a Chic Chive Pot
Our plants come in the standard nursery pot unless you opt for one of our snazzy Chive pots. Keep in mind, each plant is a unique snowflake—size, shape, and quirks may vary. We do our best to deliver a plant that resembles the online glam shot and will thrive in your home, but perfection is a tall order.
Pot Size vs. Plant Size: It’s Not You, It’s the Container
We like to keep things almost simple—plants are measured by the size of the pot they’re in, not how tall or fabulous they currently are. When someone says a plant is “in a 6-inches,” they’re talking about the diameter of the container, not the plant itself. That gorgeous fiddle leaf fig might be towering over your sofa while technically still being “in a 10-inch pot.” Height? Totally subjective. It depends on the plant species, its mood that day, and how mature it feels like being. So next time you’re plant shopping and wondering why your “small” monstera could double as a room divider—blame the pot. Not the plant.

How to take care of your Croton
If you like your houseplants as bold and sassy as your wardrobe, the Croton plant (Codiaeum variegatum) might just be your perfect match. With its dazzling technicolor leaves that scream “look at me,” the Croton makes a vibrant statement in any indoor jungle. But don’t be fooled by its show-stopping good looks—this plant has a bit of a diva reputation. Treat it right, and it’ll thrive. Ignore its needs, and it’ll throw a leafy tantrum.
Care Level
Medium: Needs some attention
Croton care isn't rocket science, but this isn’t a “set-it-and-forget-it” succulent either. Consider it a medium-level plant: it needs attention but won’t punish you for missing a watering once in a while.
Think of the Croton like a drama-loving friend. Give it the right lighting, warmth, and a little humidity, and it’ll thrive. Take away the spotlight (aka sunlight), and it’ll sulk—usually in the form of dropping leaves.
Light Requirements
This is a sun-worshipper through and through. Croton plants need bright, indirect light to keep those famous leaves as colorful as a 90s windbreaker. Inadequate light equals dull foliage, and trust us, nobody wants a faded Croton.
Ideal placement? Right by a sunny window where it gets plenty of filtered light. East or west-facing windows are perfect. Just keep it out of direct afternoon sun, or those gorgeous leaves might crisp up.
Watering
Crotons like their soil consistently moist—but not soaked. Overwatering leads to root rot. Underwatering? You guessed it—leaf drop. The key is to water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
During spring and summer (a.k.a. growing season), water a bit more often. In the cooler months, cut back and let the soil dry out a little more between waterings.
Humidity and Temperature
Crotons love humidity. If you’re in a dry climate or blasting your heat in the winter, consider placing a humidifier nearby or giving the plant occasional mistings. They thrive in temperatures between 60°F and 85°F—so no cold drafts, please. A chilly breeze will have your Croton shedding leaves faster than a dog in summer.
Soil
Use a well-draining potting mix—something rich in organic matter but with good drainage. A mix designed for tropical plants or a standard houseplant mix with some perlite works great.
Fertilize your Croton plant once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer (diluted to half strength). Don’t fertilize in the winter—give your plant a break, it’s earned it.
Interaction with Pets
Here’s the bad news: Crotons are not pet-friendly. Their sap contains compounds that can cause stomach upset, vomiting, or worse if ingested by dogs, cats, or curious toddlers. Keep them out of reach—or skip the Croton if your pets have a taste for foliage.

Croton Family
The Croton plant is a tropical shrub native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. It’s part of the Euphorbiaceae family, which is just a fancy way of saying, “this plant is related to poinsettias and also mildly toxic.” The Croton is known for its leathery leaves splashed with vibrant shades of yellow, orange, red, green, and even purple. There are dozens of varieties, each one a unique burst of color and leaf shape.
In short: it’s basically the peacock of houseplants.
