Verte Does the Work. The Pot Takes the Credit.

Feed your plants with Verte, then set them up in a pot that makes it look like you've always had a green thumb. Nobody needs to know it was mostly the plant food.

Fish fertilizer for plants has one honest drawback, and I won't pretend otherwise: it smells like a dock. There's a moment with a bully stick where the kitchen changes character and the dog, who until thirty seconds ago had a personality, becomes a single-minded animal willing to reconsider its worldview. Verte Rx Organic Funky Fish Plant Food does something similar to a houseplant — minus the sitting, because plants can't sit, but the wanting is identical.

This is fish emulsion for anyone staying genuinely organic without flinching. One bottle yields twenty litres diluted, dosed with the printed dropper, and it particularly suits big thirsty leaves — a bird of paradise, a banana plant, anything permanently asking for more. The smell fades within the hour; keep dogs away until it does, less for safety than because they will not leave the plant alone. Feed accordingly, and the plant leans in and puts out new growth like it's auditioning.

What people are saying

Why Choose Verte RX Organic Funky Fish Plant Food?

Verte Rx doesn't do gimmicks, which occasionally means telling you things a marketing department wouldn't. This bottle smells like a dock for an hour after you use it. It could have been masked, the formula compromised, the label reading ocean breeze — instead it's named Funky Fish and the dropper has printed measurements, because the line's whole approach is candor plus precision. Fish emulsion earned its place here on merit: it's one of the oldest organic feeds that genuinely works, rich in nitrogen and trace nutrients in a form roots absorb immediately rather than waiting weeks for slow breakdown. That makes it the pick for big, hungry, fast-metabolizing plants — a bird of paradise, a banana plant, anything with leaves that eat like teenagers — where a gentler organic option can't keep pace. It stays fully organic without flinching from the honest tradeoff, and the tradeoff is genuinely temporary: the smell fades within the hour, while the growth response doesn't fade at all. One bottle yields twenty litres diluted, mid-range in the line because these are plants that feed often and generously. Two years of trials on exactly this category of vigorous grower shaped the concentration, and the response is unmistakable — new leaves arriving like the plant is auditioning, because it has figured out that showing off gets it more.

Pro Tip: Little Goes a Long Way

Feed during active growth (spring through early fall) for the best results, since that's when plants are actually putting nutrients to use.

Well-Fed Plants Need a Home Worth Growing In

A Well-Fed Leaf Still Needs Cleaning

A plant fed well on fish emulsion grows bigger, glossier leaves, and bigger leaves collect more dust than anyone notices while they're congratulating themselves on being a plant person. Shiny Leaves is a leaf-cleaning spray for exactly that problem — wipe away the dust that quietly builds on big-leafed plants and help the leaf surface actually photosynthesize the way all that fish emulsion was working toward in the first place.

The Full Verte Rx Lineup

Fish emulsion is one organic option among several, and not every plant or household wants the same feeding style. There's a milder organic formula for kitchen herbs, a recovery superfood for stressed deliveries, and a fully synthetic balanced option for anyone who'd rather skip the fish-market smell entirely. The full Verte Rx lineup exists because one bottle was never going to suit every plant, or every nose.

Big Leaves Want a Pot That Can Keep Up

A bird of paradise or banana plant fed well on fish emulsion grows fast, which means the pot underneath needs real drainage to keep pace with how much water and feed the roots are processing. The Casey is a ceramic pot with an actual drainage hole, built for exactly the kind of vigorous, thirsty grower this fertilizer tends to produce. Feed it well, pot it right, and let the leaves do what they're clearly trying to do.

An Honest Bottle from Chive Studio

Chive Studio didn't set out to bottle something that smells like a dock, but staying honestly organic meant not flinching from fish emulsion. That candor has served the studio since 2004 — the studio has kept a standing invitation to Chelsea going since 2012, and finally answered Philadelphia's again this year, a full decade after the last one, building wholesale relationships with thousands of shops along the way. It's not the prettiest bottle on the shelf; it's the one that keeps a promise, which has arguably been the studio's whole approach since day one — commit to the honest version of a thing rather than the convenient one, whether that's a glaze recipe or a fertilizer nobody asked to smell nice.

Frequently asked questions

What is fish fertilizer and how does it work for plants?

Fish fertilizer is an organic feed made from fish byproducts, rich in nitrogen and trace nutrients that plants absorb readily. It works the way most organic feeds do, just faster-acting than many, because the nutrients are already in a form roots can take up quickly rather than needing to break down slowly first.

What is fish emulsion fertilizer made from?

Fish emulsion is made from processed fish byproducts, broken down into a liquid concentrate rich in nitrogen and micronutrients. It's one of the older organic fertilizer traditions precisely because it works reliably, long before synthetic alternatives existed — the smell is the tradeoff for a genuinely natural nutrient source.

Does fish emulsion fertilizer smell bad indoors?

Yes, honestly — it smells distinctly like a dock for roughly an hour after application before fading. If you're feeding indoors, apply it in a well-ventilated room or right before you're heading out, and expect the smell to be temporary rather than a permanent feature of the room.

Is fish fertilizer better than synthetic for a bird of paradise?

A bird of paradise responds well to fish emulsion specifically because it's a big, vigorous feeder that benefits from the readily-available nutrients this formula provides. Whether it's "better" than synthetic depends mostly on whether you're prioritizing organic feeding — the growth results are comparable, but only one option keeps things fully organic.

How many litres does one bottle of fish fertilizer make?

One bottle makes twenty litres of ready-to-use feed once diluted per the dropper markings. That's a solid mid-range yield for a formula typically used on the big-leafed, actively growing plants that tend to want feeding more often than a slow-growing succulent would.

Is fish fertilizer safe for pets?

The diluted, applied feed is generally safe, but the smell itself is the bigger practical issue — dogs in particular tend to find fish emulsion irresistible and may try to dig at or lick treated soil. Keep pets away from freshly-fed plants until the smell fades, roughly an hour after application.

How often should I use fish fertilizer on a snake plant?

A snake plant is a slow, low-maintenance grower and doesn't need fish emulsion as often as a fast-growing tropical would — every four to six weeks during active growth is plenty. Overfeeding a snake plant doesn't speed it up much; it mostly just means more frequent trips to a smellier watering can.

Will fish fertilizer attract pests indoors?

It can, briefly, if residue is left sitting on the soil surface rather than watered in properly. Apply it the way the dropper instructs, water it in fully, and the smell and any pest interest fade within the hour along with it — it's a temporary consideration, not an ongoing infestation risk.
