Plant Pots with Drainage — Ceramic Planters, Saucer Included

The best ceramic planters have a drainage hole, ship with a saucer, and are fired so the glaze survives years of watering, repotting, and relocation. Ceramic holds root temperature steadier than plastic and adds the weight that keeps growing plants upright. Every planter in this Chive collection meets all of it — the drainage hole isn't an option here, it's the entry requirement.

Plant pots need drainage holes because roots need air as much as water — when excess water can't leave, it fills the air pockets in the soil, the roots suffocate, and rot follows. The failure is slow and looks like overwatering guilt, but the cause is the container. A hole at the base and a saucer underneath solve it permanently, which is why every pot here has both.

A ceramic planter with drainage is one of the few teacher gift ideas that survives June: it isn't a mug, it doesn't expire, and it doesn't require the teacher to pretend. A pothos in a glazed Chive pot sits on a classroom shelf tolerating fluorescent light and summer neglect with genuinely professional composure — the same skill set, frankly, as its recipient. The saucer keeps the desk safe. The plant does the remembering.

Yes — succulents need drainage more than most plants, not less. They store water in their leaves and expect the soil to dry out completely between waterings; a sealed pot keeps the root zone damp and rots exactly the plant famous for being unkillable. A small ceramic pot with a drainage hole and saucer gives a succulent the drought-and-flood rhythm it evolved for.

Yes — a pot with saucer included saves you the separate hunt for a saucer that fits, and indoors the saucer is non-negotiable: it's what stands between the drainage hole and your furniture. Chive ships a matched, detachable saucer with every drainage design, sized to the pot, in the same box. Bottom-waterers get a bonus: the saucer doubles as the tray.

A good ceramic pot is fired hard enough that the glaze doesn't chip or fade, heavy enough to stabilize the plant it holds, and drilled for drainage. Firing quality is what you're really buying — it's the difference between a pot that survives a decade of repotting and one that crazes in a sunny window. Chive fires for the decade.

Yes — every pot on this page is a pot with a drainage hole and a matched saucer, shipped together in one box. The range runs from small succulent pots around 8 cm (3 in) through the 13 cm (5 in) houseplant majority to large floor-plant pots from 15 cm (6 in) up, in glazed ceramic and porcelain: the Minute, Tika, Liberte, and Virago families among them. Prices are in Canadian dollars. Ships across Canada from our Toronto studio.

Drainage holes prevent root rot by removing the condition it needs: water standing in the root zone. Root rot is a fungal decline that sets in when saturated soil starves roots of oxygen — the plant wilts as if thirsty, which invites more water, which finishes the job. A hole at the pot's base breaks the cycle mechanically. It is the cheapest cure in horticulture, applied in advance.
