Build Your Floral Wall With These:

Designed to cluster naturally, like a wild garden. Choose a flower as your design anchor, then grow your custom floral wall with these companions:

A 15th anniversary gift needs to survive a crystal-anniversary theme that most couples secretly find impossible to shop for, which is exactly the gap the Navy Dinner Plate Dahlia was built to fill. Dinner Plate Dahlias are the largest bloom Chive produces, a size determined less by design ambition than by the physical limits of the kiln itself — go bigger and the piece simply will not fire evenly. Navy is the colour of having tested that limit, accepted it, and decided the resulting proportions were correct all along. The dahlia's broad, overlapping petals read as deliberate rather than oversized once mounted, holding a wall the way a piece of art holds a room. The studio builds every petal by hand, layering each one individually so the scale never collapses into a flat disc. Fifteen years into a marriage, a gift this size makes its own argument. Chive has been exhibiting at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show since 2013 and has twice been awarded the 5-star booth award — only two are given each year.

How to hang & display

Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

Table & shelf display: Equally beautiful propped on a shelf, mantle, or side table. Pair with books, candles, or a small pot.

The Story Behind This Piece

We knew the dahlia was pushing the kiln's limits the day a test piece cracked clean across its widest petal ring, and the postmortem told us exactly why: heat doesn't travel evenly through a disc that large, no matter how carefully you load it. Dinner Plate Dahlias earn their name honestly in the garden, some varieties spanning a genuine dinner plate in diameter, and we spent months figuring out how to honour that scale in clay without the piece warping or splitting during the firing cycle. The solution ended up being structural rather than cosmetic: a slightly domed profile instead of a flat disc, which distributes stress evenly as the piece cools. Navy was not the first colour we tried on this form. Lighter glazes pooled unevenly across a surface this large, showing every brush pass as a visible seam. Navy's density hides those seams completely, reading as a single unbroken sheet of colour from any distance. It took four separate firing attempts to get a Navy Dinner Plate Dahlia we were willing to sell, which is three more than almost anything else in the catalogue. We don't tell most customers that. We're telling you because a fifteenth anniversary deserves to know exactly what went into the thing sitting on the wall.

Designed to Share the Same Room

Part of the Japan Collection

The Japan collection learned its patience from rooms built around one object instead of a crowded shelf — an off-centre bloom, an asymmetrical bract, a glaze left looking unfinished. Every piece trades abundance for one flower a room needs. The Navy Dinner Plate Dahlia commands a wall at its full eight-inch scale, more imposing than anything else in the collection. A meditative, single-object piece suits the same quiet corner.

Two Ways to Display

Every Chive ceramic flower works two ways: mounted vertically as a growing gallery wall, or laid flat as a no-water tablescape. The Navy Dinner Plate Dahlia holds its full dramatic scale whether mounted vertically as a solo wall statement or laid flat as the largest piece in a tablescape arrangement. Unlike a real dinner plate dahlia, this one never wilts under its own weight, on either surface, for as long as it's displayed.

Complete the Look

The Navy Dinner Plate Dahlia never needs the drainage a Brontosaurus Ceramic Plant Pot was built to provide, but something with actual roots nearby will put that drainage to immediate, daily use. Scale the pairing the way the dahlia itself was scaled — go a size larger than feels strictly necessary. Between the two, only one ever needs watering, repotting, or checking on before a trip.

About Chive Ceramics Studio

Chive started in 2004 on the premise that a ceramic flower should hold its own against the real thing, not apologize for being a substitute. That premise gets tested hardest by the largest forms we attempt, where scale magnifies every flaw a smaller piece would hide easily. The studio has spent two decades refining how heat moves through a kiln, which sounds like a narrow, unglamorous specialty until you try to fire something the size of an actual dinner plate and watch it crack. Every large-format piece that makes it to a shelf survived a testing process most customers never see or think about. That's the tradeoff for something built to last decades on a wall instead of days in a vase.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Navy Dinner Plate Dahlia hang on the wall?

How does the Navy Dinner Plate Dahlia hang on the wall? A single keyhole cutout on the back lets it mount flush against one nail, no bracket or wire needed anywhere on the piece. Given its size, we recommend a stud or anchor rather than drywall alone. Sturdy hanging matches sturdy scale.

What is a good 15th anniversary gift idea?

What is a good 15th anniversary gift idea? A good 15th anniversary gift idea should acknowledge crystal without requiring an actual crystal vase nobody has room for. The Navy Dinner Plate Dahlia brings the same visual weight in a form that never needs water or a shelf. It just needs a wall.

Is a ceramic dahlia a good 15th anniversary gift?

Is a ceramic dahlia a good 15th anniversary gift? A ceramic dahlia is a genuinely good 15th anniversary gift because crystal-anniversary traditions rarely translate into something either partner actually wants displayed. This dahlia's scale reads as a real gesture, not an afterthought. It commits to the occasion, visibly and permanently.

Does a dahlia work as wabi sabi wall art?

Does a dahlia work as wabi sabi wall art? A ceramic dahlia can work as wabi sabi wall art when its glaze is left slightly uneven rather than uniformly glossy. Navy's density here reads more like a considered surface than a decorated one. Restraint at this scale is the harder trick.

Does the Navy Dinner Plate Dahlia ship in a gift box?

Does the Navy Dinner Plate Dahlia ship in a gift box? Yes, the Navy Dinner Plate Dahlia ships in a branded gift box sized specifically for its larger scale, no awkward oversized wrapping required on your end. Nothing inside needs assembly of any kind. It arrives ready to hang immediately.

What is a good ceramic dahlia gift for someone special?

What is a good ceramic dahlia gift for someone special? A ceramic dahlia makes a genuinely good gift for someone special when its scale alone communicates effort a smaller piece couldn't manage. The Navy Dinner Plate Dahlia is difficult to overlook on any wall. It makes its case immediately, without needing an explanation.

Does a Navy ceramic dahlia outlast a fresh one?

Does a Navy ceramic dahlia outlast a fresh one? A fresh dinner plate dahlia lasts perhaps a week before its heavy bloom head droops under its own weight. The Navy ceramic version holds that exact same dramatic scale indefinitely, with zero drooping ever. No stem to snap, no vase to refill.

Is a ceramic dahlia a good gift for someone special?

Is a ceramic dahlia a good gift for someone special? A ceramic dahlia is a good gift for someone special because dinner-plate scale rarely survives shipping or a vase in real bloom form. This one arrives exactly as large as promised, permanently and without a single petal bent. It doesn't ask to be babied.
