Wall hanging

Works on drywall, plaster, or wood panelling. Drive a small screw at a slight upward angle, leaving the head proud of the wall. Slide the keyhole slot on the back over the screw head, adjust to level. Sits flush — no visible hardware.

No stud? No problem. A drywall anchor rated for the weight works fine.

Displaying a collection

Lay everything out on the floor first. Start with your anchor piece, build outward. Keep 2–3 inches between each piece and aim for the centre of the whole arrangement to land around eye level. Use painter's tape on the wall to map positions before committing to any screws.

A Dahlia in a Colour It Never Wears

We made the Powder Blue Aphrodite Dahlia because someone in the floral naming world — a person with a job title we cannot fully imagine — looked at a powder blue dahlia with ruffled petals and said: Aphrodite. And they were right.

Aphrodite is the goddess of love and beauty, born from sea foam according to the Greeks, invoked across centuries in flowers, perfumes, hotels, and at least one nail salon we once drove past that appeared to also do eyebrows. The dahlia, in powder blue, has done something interesting with the association. The dahlia, as a flower, has always had a great deal to say. In ceramic, it says everything it has to say indefinitely, without anyone asking it to wrap up, without anyone explaining that it has been on the wall for three years and the arrangement has moved on.

Dahlias mean elegance and inner strength. Aphrodite in powder blue means those things too, softened and complicated and on a wall in a room where other things are also trying to have opinions.

In 2004 Chive Ceramics Studio started with a conviction that the right form, permanently glazed, would say something a fresh flower can only borrow time to say before it begins to negotiate with the light in the wrong direction.

The dahlia is a flower we return to because it has a great deal to say and we respect that. The pompom varieties, the dinner plate varieties, the cactus varieties — each is making a different argument about what a single flower is willing to commit to. The Aphrodite is making an argument about powder blue and consequence.

We try not to over-translate. We make the piece, glaze it, and let it go to a wall where it can continue the argument indefinitely.
