There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

On the shortlist of genuinely original chinese food gifts, the Chinese Take Out Ornament stands alone: a hand-painted glass rendering of the classic white folded carton, wire handle included, at 1.38 inches long and 1.18 inches wide, rising 3.94 inches tall. The carton shape is blown into a sculpted mould while the glass still glows, and the fold lines and red pagoda details go on by brush once the form has set. The paper original was patented in the 1890s and has not required a single improvement since, which is a track record almost nothing else made by humans can claim. Gloria orders from the same place every Tuesday, and the restaurant answers the phone by reading her order back to her. That is not a transaction; that is a relationship. This ornament honours it. File it, mentally, next to the design classics inside the Royal Ontario Museum's cases — the carton has earned the company.

The Story Behind This Ornament

Gloria has ordered from the same restaurant every Tuesday for eleven years, and the order has not changed once: garlic eggplant, hot and sour soup, extra fortune cookie, which she maintains is not superstition but portfolio diversification. The restaurant knows her by voice. When she calls, they read the order back to her before she speaks, and she simply says yes and then hangs up, a complete transaction conducted in one syllable. Just once, in year six, she attempted to order something entirely different, and the man on the phone paused so long that she apologized and reverted. We modelled this ornament on the carton her food arrives in, the white fold-top with the wire handle, an object patented in the 1890s that has never needed a revision. Gloria examined our first sample and pointed out that the fold was wrong, that the flaps tuck left over right, and she was correct, and we repainted it. She hangs hers on the tree beside a photograph of the restaurant's original owner, who retired to Vancouver and still sends her a card every December. The card always says the same thing. See you Tuesday. Some relationships do not require variety. They require Tuesdays.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

Gloria's Tuesdays continue all year, and a hand-glazed peony holds the table through all fifty-two of them, which is more than any tree can offer. Chive started with ceramic flowers, blooms that skip the wilting stage entirely, and Gloria keeps one by the menu drawer where the ornament spends its off-season. Permanent food deserves permanent flowers, in her considered view. The restaurant agreed, and now displays two of their own.

About Chive Studio

Some designs are right the first time, and our founding idea in 2004 was that most things are not, so the ones that are deserve to be made carefully and left alone. Chive began with ceramic flowers that do not wilt and grew into a studio that makes permanent versions of impermanent pleasures. We are drawn to objects like the take-out carton, humble, perfected, unimproved for a century, because they remind us what the standard is. Our painters work in layers, checking each pass against the last, and a piece that misses gets melted down rather than marked down. We would rather make fewer things correctly. Eleven of our original designs are still in the catalogue. We consider that the whole argument.

Frequently asked questions

What are some truly original chinese food gifts this year?

A hand-painted glass take-out carton is the most original one we know of — familiar shape, permanent form, wire handle included. Gloria, who has ordered the same Tuesday dinner for eleven straight years, called it the only gift that ever understood her relationship with the restaurant. It honours the ritual without requiring refrigeration. That is a rare combination. Order accordingly.

Is the Chinese Take Out ornament a good stocking stuffer?

Stockings reward exactly this shape — at just 1.38 inches long and 1.18 inches wide, the carton slides into a stocking upright as though engineered for the job. Gloria's niece found hers wedged next to a clementine and reported that the scale felt correct, carton to citrus. Slim, vertical, and unmistakable at first reach. Stocking architecture, solved.

Who would enjoy getting the Chinese Take Out ornament?

Anyone with a standing order — the person whose restaurant knows their voice, whose Tuesday is spoken for, whose comfort food is a fixed coordinate. Gloria's niece reports the ornament permanently settled the family's annual debate over what to get her, which tells you the category exactly: people for whom takeout is a relationship. Give it to your household's designated orderer. They have earned recognition.

Is the Chinese Take Out ornament real glass?

Real glass, blown into a sculpted mould and painted by hand down to the red pagoda and the fold lines. Gloria checked the pagoda red against the sign of her actual restaurant and reported a match, an audit we did not know we were undergoing. The wire handle is genuine wire, bent by hand. Authenticity runs through the whole carton.

How tall is the Chinese Take Out christmas tree ornament?

It stands 3.94 inches tall, with a slim 1.38 by 1.18 inch footprint — carton proportions, faithfully kept. The slimness is the practical point: it slots between existing ornaments without forcing a reshuffle. Passersby have knocked on Gloria's door to ask about it twice. Most people end up buying two.

How should I store the Chinese Take Out ornament?

Tissue-wrap it, keep it upright in a compartmented ornament box, and give the wire handle room so nothing presses against it. Gloria stores hers in the drawer with the takeout menus, which we cannot officially endorse but must admit is thematically airtight. Cool, dry, and padded is the whole formula. The carton asks very little.

What pairs well with the Chinese Take Out ornament?

Its natural companions live in our Food & Drink christmas ornaments — the 6 pack of Beer completes the order, and Gloria adds the Macaron for what she calls dessert logic. A tree can host an entire delivery, course by course, and Gloria's very nearly does. The menu expands a little every December. Nobody has objected yet.

Does the Chinese Take Out ornament arrive gift boxed?

No — there is no gift box; it arrives in secure protective transit packaging designed to get the glass to you flawless, with the wrapping left to you. Gloria wraps hers in actual takeout tissue from the restaurant, which the staff now set aside for her every December without being asked. The protection is our department. The presentation is yours.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
