The large Tika in Black is a glazed ceramic plant pot with a center drainage hole and a matching saucer, and there is a certain kind of person who will tell you, with complete conviction, that they only buy black pots because the plant pops off the black. They have said this sentence many times. They will say it again.

They are not wrong. The plant does pop, in the way things pop when the background has decided to stop competing and simply support. But something in the delivery suggests the black pot person arrived at this opinion long ago and has not felt the need to revisit it since, which is either very decisive or the container equivalent of only wearing black clothing. Glazed ceramic holds moisture more evenly than raw terracotta. We say all of this with respect: those people are always the most interesting ones in the room.

Potting Tips

  1. Repot in the evening.
  2. Wait 1–2 days after watering, then repot.
  3. Buy potting mix. Not backyard dirt.
  4. Move the top layer of soil from the old pot into the new one. It's a little ecosystem.
  5. Never go more than one inch bigger.
  6. Soil line sits an inch below the rim. Leca or small rocks at the bottom for drainage.

Pot Care instructions
  1. Dishwasher-safe. Can also be hand-washed with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.
  2. Glazed pots are dipped and fired in the kiln — they are sealed, durable, and not looking for trouble. No special cleaning products required.
  3. For pots with saucers empty the saucer periodically. Standing water in the saucer defeats the purpose of having a drainage hole, which is a thing we feel strongly about.
  4. Not frost-safe. Designed for indoor use and covered outdoor temperate weather use. Freezing temperatures are not recommended.

Black: The Large Tika Pot That Makes the Plant Pop

A good black is harder to make than people assume. Cheap black glaze goes flat. It reads like plastic. It shows off every speck of dust. We chased a black with depth instead. One that looks like ink, not paint. It took longer than any other colour in the line.

The result has a quiet richness. In low light it reads near-charcoal. In bright light a little warmth comes through. It never looks like a void. It looks considered. That depth is the entire reason it works.

This is the pot people buy for other people. A serious plant friend is hard to shop for. They already own everything. They have opinions. The black Tika solves it every time. It flatters any plant they keep. It matches any shelf they have built. Nobody has ever returned one.

It is also the safe bet that does not feel safe. Black is decisive. It says you knew what you wanted. The plant in front of it gets all the drama.

We obsess over colour for a living. You would expect us to skip black. We did the opposite. We obsessed over it. A line about colour needs one flawless dark anchor. This is ours. We got it right.

The shape was settled long before the colour was, which is usually how it goes here.

Potting a plant with Chive

  1. It's best to repot your plant in the evening. Trust us, we know.
  2. Repot 1–2 days after watering — keeps the same rhythm going and won't shock it.
  3. Potting soil is not the dirt from your backyard. Go buy good, nutrient-rich soil.
  4. The top layer of soil in your current pot should be the top layer in the new pot too. It's a little ecosystem your plant likes.
  5. Never go more than one inch bigger than your existing pot. "It'll grow into it" is not correct, and you will kill it.
  6. Keep the soil line about an inch below the top of the pot. Add some leca or small rocks to the bottom for better aeration.

The Ultimate Repotting Guide

For those who have killed a plant. Or several. Or, frankly, many.

Before you put a plant into your new pot, you have to get it out of the nursery pot — a process that ends badly more often than any gardening influencer will admit. We wrote a full guide: when to repot (early spring, and not when you're feeling impulsive in October), which soil to use, how to tell your plant is root-bound, and how to avoid the three mistakes that kill perfectly healthy plants within a week of a well-intentioned repotting.

The Tika Family

The Tika comes in three sizes. Three-inch, five-inch, and Large. Black runs in the eight-inch Large. Same glaze across the family. Same drainage. Same saucer. Black is the decisive one. It still plays well with the rest. Pick a few colours. The set was built to mix.

Pots With Drainage

A pot without drainage drowns roots slowly. The Large Tika has a real hole and a saucer. So does every pot in this collection. Black drains as clean as the rest. Browse the full drainage range. We do not make pots that kill your plants.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Tika in Black best suited to?

The pot is sorted. Now what goes in it?

Shido seeds come vacuum-sealed, non-GMO, and packaged well enough that people keep the packets after the seeds are gone. Which is either a design success or a problem, depending on how you look at it.

Your new pot is waiting.
