The large Tika in Green Sheen is a glazed ceramic plant pot with a center drainage hole and a matching saucer, and the name is something we typed into the website with a straight face and have been quietly embarrassed about ever since. Nobody in this studio has ever called it Green Sheen. It is tennis-ball yellow, the color that bypasses every rational part of your brain and lands somewhere older and louder and considerably less polite.

You did not come in looking for this color. You came in looking for something considered, something a person with taste would choose after careful reflection. Then you saw this, picked it up, put it back, and picked it up again, and the careful reflection was over. Glazed ceramic holds moisture more evenly than raw terracotta. The tennis-ball yellow was coming home with you, and your existing decor was going to have to figure it out. Green Sheen. Sure. That is what we are calling it.

Potting Tips

  1. Repot in the evening.
  2. Wait 1–2 days after watering, then repot.
  3. Buy potting mix. Not backyard dirt.
  4. Move the top layer of soil from the old pot into the new one. It's a little ecosystem.
  5. Never go more than one inch bigger.
  6. Soil line sits an inch below the rim. Leca or small rocks at the bottom for drainage.

Pot Care instructions
  1. Dishwasher-safe. Can also be hand-washed with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.
  2. Glazed pots are dipped and fired in the kiln — they are sealed, durable, and not looking for trouble. No special cleaning products required.
  3. For pots with saucers empty the saucer periodically. Standing water in the saucer defeats the purpose of having a drainage hole, which is a thing we feel strongly about.
  4. Not frost-safe. Designed for indoor use and covered outdoor temperate weather use. Freezing temperatures are not recommended.

Green Sheen: The Large Tika Pot in Tennis Ball Yellow

Here is a confession. On the website it is called Green Sheen. We typed that with a straight face. We have been quietly embarrassed ever since. Nobody in the studio calls it that. Nobody ever will. It is tennis ball yellow. Everyone who sees it knows immediately.

We did not plan a cult colour. We got one anyway. Green Sheen is the Tika people name first. They cite it when they describe their shelf. They photograph it more than any other shade. It is the pot their friends ask about. It is the one they swear they chose on purpose.

The gloss is half the appeal. It catches light and throws it back. On a grey afternoon it does the most work in the room. A dark plant in front of it looks staged. It was not staged. The yellow just makes everything near it look deliberate.

This is the loudest colour we make. We are not sorry about that. Loud was always the point. The Tika began as a play on colour. Green Sheen is that play turned all the way up. People come in cautious. They leave with the yellow. Then they return for a calmer colour to sit beside it.

The shape was settled long before the colour was, which is usually how it goes here.

Potting a plant with Chive

  1. It's best to repot your plant in the evening. Trust us, we know.
  2. Repot 1–2 days after watering — keeps the same rhythm going and won't shock it.
  3. Potting soil is not the dirt from your backyard. Go buy good, nutrient-rich soil.
  4. The top layer of soil in your current pot should be the top layer in the new pot too. It's a little ecosystem your plant likes.
  5. Never go more than one inch bigger than your existing pot. "It'll grow into it" is not correct, and you will kill it.
  6. Keep the soil line about an inch below the top of the pot. Add some leca or small rocks to the bottom for better aeration.

The Ultimate Repotting Guide

For those who have killed a plant. Or several. Or, frankly, many.

Before you put a plant into your new pot, you have to get it out of the nursery pot — a process that ends badly more often than any gardening influencer will admit. We wrote a full guide: when to repot (early spring, and not when you're feeling impulsive in October), which soil to use, how to tell your plant is root-bound, and how to avoid the three mistakes that kill perfectly healthy plants within a week of a well-intentioned repotting.

The Tika Family

The Tika comes in three sizes. Three-inch, five-inch, and Large. Green Sheen runs in the eight-inch Large. Same glaze across the family. Same drainage. Same saucer. The loud yellow has quieter siblings. Pick a few. The colours were built to sit together on one shelf.

Pots With Drainage

Big plants need big drainage. The Large Tika has a real hole and a saucer. So does every pot in this collection. Roots rot without somewhere for water to go. Green Sheen drains clean. Browse the rest of the drainage range and stop guessing.

Start It From Seed

A loud pot wants a plant with presence. Grow one yourself. Shido Seeds start fast and grow true. Radishes in two weeks. Flowers when you get to them. The packets are almost too nice to open. Open them. Then pot the result in Green Sheen.

Frequently asked questions

The pot is sorted. Now what goes in it?

Shido seeds come vacuum-sealed, non-GMO, and packaged well enough that people keep the packets after the seeds are gone. Which is either a design success or a problem, depending on how you look at it.

Your new pot is waiting.
