There's No Such Thing as Just One Ornament

Pick a favorite. Then accept that "just one" was never really an option.

A quality turtle ornament should feel unhurried even on the branch, and this one does: glass blown one breath at a time into an animal that has been arriving at its chosen pace for two hundred million years without revision. The shell is painted green-brown by hand with legs extended in calm forward motion, a hanging cord secured at the top. The slow is not a limitation — it is the method, and the method works in ways that faster strategies have never quite replicated. My friend Dale walks to the grocery store that is eleven minutes away by car because he says the walk is the point and the groceries are merely the secondary outcome. Dale has not been in a hurry since 2003 and he has missed nothing of consequence. Hang this for whoever takes their time — not because they cannot move faster but because they settled on the right pace years ago. The Royal Ontario Museum houses Triassic shells; consider this our glass contribution to that archive.

The Story Behind This Ornament

The turtle carries its house on its back and moves at the pace it selected two hundred million years ago and has never revised. It arrives. It has always arrived. The speed was never the issue and anyone who thinks it was has been measuring the wrong variable. My friend Dale walks to the grocery store that is eleven minutes away by car because he decided years ago that the walk was the point and the groceries were incidental. Dale does not own a watch. He owned one once and said it made him anxious, not because he was late but because it suggested the possibility of lateness, which was a concept he had already rejected on principle. He gets to the store when he gets to the store. The avocados are still there. They do not leave. Dale and the avocados have an understanding that requires no coordination and no urgency and no watch. His wife says he is the slowest person she has ever loved and she says it the way you say something that started as a complaint and became a compliment when you were not paying attention. This ornament records Dale's philosophy in glass and hangs it on a branch where it will not be rushed.

Care Tips

Storage Do’s and Don’ts:

(Because Yes, They’re Fragile)

  • Do wrap each ornament individually in soft tissue paper, bubble wrap, or a gentle cloth. (No, shoving them in a shoebox with tinsel does not count.)
  • Don’t let them clink around in a box together. That’s a recipe for heartbreak and glittery shards.
  • Do store them in a sturdy container (plastic bins with dividers = chef’s kiss) and keep it in a cool, dry place — no attics or sketchy basements, please.

Pro Tip: Label the box like your life depends on it.

Write it on every side, not just the top, since nobody unloading a truck reads the top first. If you're storing these for next year, do future you a favor and note what's inside beyond just "ornaments." A little specificity now saves a lot of bubble wrap archaeology in eleven months.

Ornaments Are a Great Gift. We Have Opinions About the Rest.

More Animal Christmas Ornaments

Our Animal collection is a census of the creatures who actually run our households, taken in hand-painted glass. The Green Dragon Ornament guards the census with a patience that rivals any shell.

Hand-Blown Glass Christmas Ornaments

Hand-painted glass rewards the close look, and every Chive ornament is made to be inspected at arm's length — the distance where trees are actually enjoyed. The Turtle delivers at that range with a shell pattern painted ridge by ridge under magnification. There's a whole Animal Christmas Ornaments collection of handmade glass waiting.

Ceramic Flowers That Never Wilt

A Turtle ornament on the tree moves slowly toward becoming the piece everyone notices first. For the walls, Chive's Ceramic Flowers accomplish the same thing at an even more patient pace — porcelain blooms shaped by hand, mounted flat, holding colour indefinitely and requiring nothing from you except a nail and a wall. Both lines begin as raw material and end as handmade objects that outlast every season they witness.

About Chive Studio

Chive started in 2004 and has not been in a hurry since, which is less a marketing position than an operational fact about hand-blown glass: it cannot be rushed and we learned that early and built everything around it. Our artisans blow each ornament one at a time, paint each surface by hand, then fix the hanging hardware when the piece is cool and the work is done correctly. Dale would approve of the pace. We began designing ceramic flowers and added ornaments after noticing the people who bought handmade flowers were the same people who wanted handmade glass for their trees. Care recognizes care. The customer who turns an ornament in the light is who we build for.

Frequently asked questions

Who makes a quality turtle ornament in blown glass?

Chive makes a quality turtle ornament in blown glass, shaped one breath at a time from molten material and painted green-brown by hand with legs extended in calm forward motion. The shell carries the kind of surface detail that distinguishes handmade from mass-produced: small variations in paint thickness that prove a person held the brush. Dale says quality is a pace decision.

Would the Turtle ornament make a great secret santa pick?

A Turtle Ornament at a secret santa exchange tells whoever opens it that you put thought into a random assignment, which is the highest compliment a drawn name can receive. Blown glass with a hand-painted shell stands out against the usual field of mugs and candy, and the turtle's calm expression suggests it expected to be chosen. It carries that energy.

Who would love the Turtle ornament as a gift?

Anyone who takes their time and has stopped apologizing for it. The deliberate friend. The person who reads the whole menu before ordering. The gardener who watches a seed become a plant and finds the watching more satisfying than the harvest. Turtles appeal to people who have made peace with their own pace. That's a smaller, better group than you'd expect.

What material is the Turtle ornament made of?

The Turtle Ornament is made of glass, blown by hand from a gather of molten material and painted once the form has cooled. The shell is detailed in green-brown tones applied by brush, one section at a time. Glass carries a weight and a translucence that resin and plastic do not replicate. You know the difference the moment you hold it.

How big is the Turtle ornament on the tree?

The Turtle Ornament measures 4.49 inches long, 3.07 inches wide, and 5.5 inches tall, making it one of the larger ornaments in our collection and giving the shell enough surface area for the hand-painted detail to register from a few feet away. Dale would say give it a solid limb and it will stay forever. It hangs from a sturdy branch.

How should I store the Turtle ornament after christmas?

Wrap it in tissue with extra padding around the legs, which extend from the shell and are the most exposed point during storage. Place it in a rigid box, store it somewhere dry and stable, and do not stack heavy objects on top. The turtle has survived two hundred million years by protecting its shell. Extend the courtesy to the painted one.

Do you have more animal ornaments like the Turtle?

We have a full roster. The Animal Christmas Ornaments collection includes everything from dragons to whales to dogs in sprinkles, all blown from glass and painted by hand. The Turtle fits the collection because every creature here was chosen for the same reason. People love them specifically, not generically, and that's what we build for.

Does the Turtle ornament come in a gift box?

The Turtle Ornament does not come in a gift box. It ships in protective packaging designed to get blown glass from our studio to your door intact, which it does reliably. If you are giving it as a gift, the wrapping is your department — and honestly, wrapping it yourself gives you the chance to match the paper to the person. The turtle will wait.

A Promise Fresh Flowers Can't Keep

Fresh flowers make a promise they cannot keep. A Chive ceramic flower skips the wilting and arrives with the kind of presence that suggests someone spent real time choosing it, whether or not that is true. No water. No sunlight. No expiration date to plan around.
