The Virago Large Style A is a matte porcelain plant pot made for floor plants and big tabletop plants, the size up from the Medium in a line Chive first made only in white, out of spite. White sold first. It still does. Chive added colour anyway, and the Large now comes in White, Black, Blue Grey, Olive and Soft Pink, each with the same dense, textured finish.

Style A is one of three textured patterns in the Large, and it comes in four sizes: 6, 7, 8 and 10 inches across, each as tall as it is wide. That range covers a rubber plant, a young fiddle leaf fig, or a dracaena that has started reaching for the ceiling. Porcelain at this size is heavy, which is the point, because weight keeps a top-heavy plant upright. The centre drainage hole and detachable saucer keep the floor dry. Pick the size above the nursery pot. Plants rarely ask permission before growing.

Potting Tips

  1. Repot in the evening.
  2. Wait 1–2 days after watering, then repot.
  3. Buy potting mix. Not backyard dirt.
  4. Move the top layer of soil from the old pot into the new one. It's a little ecosystem.
  5. Never go more than one inch bigger.
  6. Soil line sits an inch below the rim. Leca or small rocks at the bottom for drainage.

Pot Care instructions
  1. Dishwasher-safe. Can also be hand-washed with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.
  2. Glazed pots are dipped and fired in the kiln — they are sealed, durable, and not looking for trouble. No special cleaning products required.
  3. For pots with saucers empty the saucer periodically. Standing water in the saucer defeats the purpose of having a drainage hole, which is a thing we feel strongly about.
  4. Not frost-safe. Designed for indoor use and covered outdoor temperate weather use. Freezing temperatures are not recommended.

A Large Porcelain Pot That Holds Its Ground

The Virago Large was designed in 2022, after the smaller Viragos had spent years proving a point we never meant to make. We built the line in white because every other colour kept getting ignored, and then white sold so well that people asked for bigger ones. The Large is the answer to that request, delivered with only a little resentment.

Large is where porcelain earns its keep. At 6 to 10 inches across, the pot has to hold a plant with real height and a root ball that has opinions, and lighter materials tend to tip once the leaves outgrow the base. Porcelain fires dense and heavy, so the Virago stays where you put it, even when someone brushes past with a laundry basket. Style A carries one of the line's three textured patterns, pressed into the surface so the matte finish catches light unevenly, the way good plaster does.

The centre drainage hole lets water leave, and the detachable saucer catches it before it reaches the floor. Neither feature is glamorous. Both are the reason a rubber plant is still alive in March. We tested the Large against the plants people actually buy at this size and revised it until the proportions stopped bothering us, which took longer than anyone planned. Most people still buy it in white. We have made our peace with that, mostly.

Potting a plant with Chive

  1. It's best to repot your plant in the evening. Trust us, we know.
  2. Repot 1–2 days after watering — keeps the same rhythm going and won't shock it.
  3. Potting soil is not the dirt from your backyard. Go buy good, nutrient-rich soil.
  4. The top layer of soil in your current pot should be the top layer in the new pot too. It's a little ecosystem your plant likes.
  5. Never go more than one inch bigger than your existing pot. "It'll grow into it" is not correct, and you will kill it.
  6. Keep the soil line about an inch below the top of the pot. Add some leca or small rocks to the bottom for better aeration.

The Ultimate Repotting Guide

For those who have killed a plant. Or several. Or, frankly, many.

Before you put a plant into your new pot, you have to get it out of the nursery pot — a process that ends badly more often than any gardening influencer will admit. We wrote a full guide: when to repot (early spring, and not when you're feeling impulsive in October), which soil to use, how to tell your plant is root-bound, and how to avoid the three mistakes that kill perfectly healthy plants within a week of a well-intentioned repotting.

The Rest of the Virago Family

Style A is one of three Large patterns, and the Medium carries the same finish at shelf height, so a room full of Viragos can match without repeating itself.

For the Part You Cannot See

A pot cannot feed a plant, but Verte Rx can. It is the indoor plant food that looks after roots and leaf colour while the Virago Large handles everything you can see.

The Huntington Noticed. So Did Chicago.

Chive Studio has designed pots and ceramic flowers in Toronto since 2004. Every shape starts as a sketch and a disagreement, and nothing leaves the studio until the proportions stop looking slightly wrong to everyone involved. The large sizes take longest, because a flaw that hides on a small pot gets bigger right along with the pot.

Botanical gardens tend to be strict about what goes in their shops, and they keep choosing Chive. The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens carries the work, and so does the Chicago Botanic Garden. Exhibiting at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show since 2013; twice awarded the 5-star booth award — only two are given each year. Chive ships to 40+ countries and has never sold to a big-box retailer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Virago Large porcelain pot good for?

The Virago Large is a porcelain pot for floor plants and larger tabletop plants. It suits rubber plants, dracaenas, ZZ plants, young fiddle leaf figs and bird of paradise, and fits modern, minimalist and boho rooms alike. As a large indoor pot, it comes in four sizes from 6 to 10 inches, so it can follow a plant through more than one repotting.

Does the Virago Large have a drainage hole and saucer?

Yes, the Virago Large is a porcelain plant pot with a centre drainage hole and a detachable saucer. Excess water drains through instead of pooling around the roots, which is the most common cause of root rot in large indoor plants. Water until a little collects in the saucer, then empty it, so the plant never sits in standing water.

What size plant fits the Virago Large Style A?

Choose the Virago Large size that is an inch or two wider than your plant's nursery pot. The 6 and 7 inch sizes suit plants coming out of a 5 or 6 inch grower pot, the 8 inch fits most 6 to 7 inch plants, and the 10 inch suits floor plants. Each size is as tall as it is wide, so the proportions stay balanced.

Is the Virago Large a good rubber plant pot?

The Virago Large is a good rubber plant pot because rubber plants grow tall and top-heavy, and dense porcelain keeps them steady. The drainage hole matters as much as the weight, since rubber plants dislike wet roots. Most rubber plants sold as indoor floor plants will suit the 8 or 10 inch size, with room to grow before the next repot.

Is the Virago Large a good gift for a new homeowner?

The Virago Large is a reliable gift for a new homeowner because every new home has an empty corner waiting for a plant. It arrives as a pot and saucer set, so nothing else needs buying, and the saucer protects new floors from the first watering. It is useful rather than decorative clutter, which is the kind of gift people keep.

Is the Virago Large made of porcelain or ceramic?

The Virago Large is a porcelain pot, and porcelain is a type of ceramic fired harder and denser than standard clay. That density gives it weight, a smooth matte finish and better resistance to chipping. The surface is glazed, so it wipes clean and does not soak up water the way unglazed terracotta does. A damp cloth handles most cleaning.

How do I water a plant in the Virago Large?

To water a plant in the Virago Large, pour slowly until water starts to collect in the saucer, then wait a few minutes and tip out what is left. Large pots hold more soil, so they dry out more slowly than small ones. Check the top inch or two of soil before watering again rather than following a fixed schedule.

Does the Virago Large make a good indoor plant gift?

The Virago Large makes a good indoor plant gift, especially paired with a plant that has outgrown its nursery pot. It suits most rooms, comes with its own saucer and solves a problem the recipient probably already has. Gifts that get used tend to be remembered. A large porcelain pot holding a healthy plant falls firmly into that category.

The pot is sorted. Now what goes in it?

Shido seeds come vacuum-sealed, non-GMO, and packaged well enough that people keep the packets after the seeds are gone. Which is either a design success or a problem, depending on how you look at it.

Your new pot is waiting.
